The press was government surplus, and had operated at the Denver Mint between 1986 and 2001. Carr restored the press himself in his Loveland, Colorado workshop. He began using the press, along with his VS3D sculpting software to strike his own privately-issued coins and medals. The US Government bought out the company in the 1860s, and eventually converted it into the Denver Mint.
