One of the longest poems in the English language, it was crafted by Spenser as an allegorical tribute to the Tudor dynasty and Queen Elizabeth I. The poem is a major production with a cast of knights, warriors, and beasts. Una is a young princess whose parents are imprisoned by a dragon, so she goes on a quest to free them. Along the way, she enchants and befriends a lion who becomes her stalwart companion. Una represents the Church of England, according to literary scholars, and her ultimate story ties in with St. George, whom you might be more familiar with as the dragon slayer proper.

This famous poem inspired many an artistic work depicting Una and the Lion, leading up to depictions in coins. The most famous specimen is the 1839 British £5 gold coin depicting Queen Victoria on the obverse and Una and the Lion on the reverse. Designed by Royal Mint chief engraver William Wyon, this goes down in history as one of the most beautiful British coins ever struck.

So we come to our current specimen, a silver tribute to this historic piece. The obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II, engraved by British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The reverse is a far more dramatic and striking depiction of Una and the Lion. The lion charges right out of the surface at your, with a mighty roar and claws ready to strike. Una herself is regal and a staff, perhaps ready for combat herself.

So now you know the history, get the coin!
