They were initially prevented from entering the school by Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas. They then attended after the intervention of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. This commemorative proof was issued to mark a half-century from that important moment in the civil rights movement. The obverse of this coin features armed soldiers escorting students as they walk to school. And the reverse features the school as it appeared in 1957.
